Jerome Kern, the composer, died yesterday at 1:10 P.M. of a cerebral hemorrhage in Doctors Hospital. His age was 60. At the bedside were his wife, Eva Leale Kern; his daughter, Elizabeth Kern, former wife of Artie Shaw, the bandleader, and Oscar Hammerstein 2d, producer and song writer, who was closely associated with Mr. Kern in his career.

Jerome David Kern was an American composer of musical theatre and popular music. One of the most important American theatre composers of the early 20th century, Kern created dozens of Broadway musicals and Hollywood films in a career that lasted for more than four decades.

Jerome Kern was born in 1885 in New York, to a first generation Jewish-German family. Although his mother recognised his talent and encouraged him in music from an early age, his father insisted that no son of his would ever pursue such a disreputable career as composing. Jerome Kern's (27 Jan 1885-11 Nov 1945, age 60) friendship with Noël Coward (16 Dec 1899-26 March 1973, age 73) resulted with an agreement for them to collaborate on a future musical play project. With Jerome Kern's death, 11 November 1945, age 60, Noël lamented that they were prevented from sharing the collaboration experience.
